My father handed me one of his spare Nikons, an FM2, when I was 10 years old, growing up in a small mill town in northeastern North Carolina. Back then summers were spent exploring the wilderness along the Roanoke River and the countryside of the rural south. About a year after I was handed my first camera I was processing my own film and making prints before earning my first byline for a story/picture package of a middle school basketball game on January 9th, 1992.

Over the ensuing decades, I’ve worked in newspapers across the country amassing over 100 awards from collegiate, state, and national journalism/photojournalism institutions.

I am an alumnus of the Eddie Adams Workshop 2001.

My father and grandfather before me were newspapermen. Collectively my family has over a century of experience in the newspaper profession.

Today, I work as a freelance photojournalist and writer with a wide variety of knowledge and skill. My degree is in commercial photography with an emphasis on essay and portraiture. I work in a variety of digital and film formats, infrared, and in-camera multiple exposures.

This archive is for my family, Jeana, Wilson, Stella, and our new boy Milo, so they may be proud.

All are welcome here. Thanks for noticing.

Currently thriving on Colorado's Western Slope where I am also the curator of the

“Will's shots are straight up dope. Hire him now before you can't afford him”

“William is one of the most skilled photojournalists I have ever worked with. His ability to capture powerful, telling moments are legendary. Will is compassionate yet dogged. He knows how to tell a story with his lens. A picture is worth a thousand words. But only one word is needed to describe Will's ability and dedication to his craft, and that word is "amazing."”

“Will doesn’t just take a picture, he captures the joy and the sorrow of the moment. His photo of a family’s belongings on the curb after being evicted touched me in a deep place. The agony of the family but also our nation at this dark time was captured in a photo of garbage bags, a couch and toys. That image will be with me for years to come. Will you are a gifted man!”
